In fond Memory of a Barrow Celtic Juniors record breaker

Barrow Celtic Juniors FC wishes to pass its condolences to the family of club stalwart Mike McParland Snr.

Mike Snr had been involved almost continuously with the club for over 50 years going back to 1953 when he started as an under 16. In his first game that season Barrow Celtic Juniors beat Roose 20 – 0 with Mike Snr becoming the first ever player to score 10 in a single game.

After his national service, he played for a time with Barrow AFC but he returned to Barrow Celtic following an injury and joined the open age team. It was shortly after this that he became the clubs secretary.

During the 1970s he spent 4 seasons coaching his sons up to under 16. After they moved up to the open age Mike assisted the coach and together they took the team to the North Western AFL championship.

Lifelong friend and current Barrow Celtic Juniors Chairman Dennis Boyd said “He was a terrific person, and a great family man. Mike was a brilliant sportsman, and as a footballer he was quick, fearless and a great goal-scorer. He was an inspirational player. He was as thorough a person behind the scenes, with paperwork and preparation, as anybody I have ever worked with. He was a good friend.”

In tribute to Mike, this years Under 7 team will wear shirts bearing the McParland family name.

Under 12s finish as runners up at Holker

Under 12s beaten in final of Holker Old Boys Gala

The Under 12s improved on their 3rd place finish in the Holker Street Sixes by finishing as runners up at Rakesmoor Lane on Sunday.

After going 3 games unbeaten in the group stage, the team had to win their final game against Barrow Wanderers by 4 goals to ensure a place in the semi finals. Goals from Erin Lightfoot, Jack Osman, Ryan Frazer-Knight and Sam Frazer-Knight secured the semi final place against group 1 winners Furness Rovers.

The semi final was a tense affair with Celtic losing the toss and being made to play up hill. A headed goal by Sam Frazer-Knight from Jack Osmans long throw put Celtic into the lead. The goal scorer then used his head at the other end, clearing multiple crosses and shots from the Furness Rovers players. The game was put beyond doubt when the referee, after careful consideration, judged that Ryan Frazer-Knight’s smartly taken corner had gone through the inside of the side netting.

The final was played against Holker Old Boys Stags with Celtic this time playing down hill and they took an early lead through Jack Osman. The lead didn’t last too long with Holker hitting back almost immediately and then taking the lead. Ryan Frazer-Knight forced the game into extra time with his equalizer.

Extra time was played with two halves of 5 minutes. Celtic were unable to find the goal and unfortunately succumed to the Holker counter attack in the second half. The game ending 3-2.

The club were also represented at the tournament on Saturday by the Under 8s, 9s and 10s.
