Under 7 Boys take home Autumn Shield

Under 7 Boys win Autumn Shield

A wet and horrible Saturday on the 3G pitch at Furness College saw Barrow Celtic Juniors Under 7 Boys, managed by Dennis Boyd and Jason Andrews lift the Autumn Shield.

A good qualification round the previous week encouraged both managers and players that success could be possible.

The horrendous wind and rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of the team as they finished unbeaten on the day to win the shield by the slimmest of margins, beating Holker Old Boys to the title with a single goal difference!

Crooklands Gala – Reports

Under 11 Boys narrowly miss out on knockout stages

The Under 11 boys led by captain Aidan Woodend put in an incredible effort on Saturday at Crooklands during the preseason gala.

Debuts were given to Evan Tyson and Under 11 Girls player Georgia McSkimmings who both also performed well on the day.

The Under 11 boys squad is shaping up nicely and are looking forward to good season ahead.

U10’s Team Coach – Match Report – Ulverston Gala

Well done today guys and massive thank you to everyone who managed to get their lads there. It was a little short notice with the date change of the competition so we had a couple of players missing!

The first game that we played against Swarthmoor Villa was quality. A good 4 – 1 win with Ethan scoring 2, Brandon and Kian scoring 1 each and some brilliant defending and attacking as a team. It was good to see the team work.

The first game was a bit easier then the second game against Hawcoat Minions. We went 3-nil down after Brandon did a silly hand ball offering them a cheap free kick and goal for their 3rd! Ethan scored 2 for a brilliant come back and we actually dominated Hawcoat towards the end of the game but just to seal the deal Hawcoat had a cheeky shot from the half way line that managed to find its way through Mkells gloves. Finished 4 – 2.

I’m sure the 3rd game against Crooklands finished 3 – 1 to Crooklands. In the first 2 games we had plenty of discipline. With no moaning and plenty of talking between the players. The lads were trying their best not to get caught out of position. When Crooklands scored 2 we managed to carry on and get something out of the game. Our passing and team work lead to Kian scoring a peach, right place at the right time and I couldn’t be prouder. The last five minutes of that game was particularly good! The actually looked like the passing team we’ve been desperate for them to be. Some really good close one touch football 👊.

I thought Mkell did some brilliant saves throughout the competition!

We managed to keep a clean sheet in our final game winning 4 – 0 Ethan and Brandon scored 2 each.

In fond Memory of a Barrow Celtic Juniors record breaker

Barrow Celtic Juniors FC wishes to pass its condolences to the family of club stalwart Mike McParland Snr.

Mike Snr had been involved almost continuously with the club for over 50 years going back to 1953 when he started as an under 16. In his first game that season Barrow Celtic Juniors beat Roose 20 – 0 with Mike Snr becoming the first ever player to score 10 in a single game.

After his national service, he played for a time with Barrow AFC but he returned to Barrow Celtic following an injury and joined the open age team. It was shortly after this that he became the clubs secretary.

During the 1970s he spent 4 seasons coaching his sons up to under 16. After they moved up to the open age Mike assisted the coach and together they took the team to the North Western AFL championship.

Lifelong friend and current Barrow Celtic Juniors Chairman Dennis Boyd said “He was a terrific person, and a great family man. Mike was a brilliant sportsman, and as a footballer he was quick, fearless and a great goal-scorer. He was an inspirational player. He was as thorough a person behind the scenes, with paperwork and preparation, as anybody I have ever worked with. He was a good friend.”

In tribute to Mike, this years Under 7 team will wear shirts bearing the McParland family name.
